Reflections, intentions and mapping out your creative path
As we’re approaching the end of this year, we’re in the season of reflecting on the past and setting intentions for the future.
Last week, I shared a bonus practice in the private group for 12 Days of Sing From The Source (this is a free 12 day program with self care practices featuring a unique combination of voice work, breathing & body work, vocal improvisation, mindset work, energy work and creativity & artistry coaching. It starts today 25 December, and you can still join! Your singing Self will thank you ❤️)
Reflecting on 2024
The practice that I shared with the participants of the 12 Days is a practice of reflecting on your past year, so you can use that information to map out an intentional path for your creative goals - including your creative projects, voice & music goals, creative career, business and life goals.
I do this practice every single December for more than 10 years already, and it's so important to me that a couple of years ago I ended up creating a robust process around it for yearly, and even quarterly planning for your creative goals.
Planning all starts with reflecting on the past. All aligned action comes from awareness first.
You can do a yearly reflection in any way that feels nice, exciting - or just plain doable for you! The doable part is especially important, because you wanna get it done and not start procrastinating about it because the task of reflecting feeling to big.
To make it doable: give yourself a time limit and actually set a timer with an alarm! Also, remember: It's not about "trying to get it perfect" - it's about getting it done 😊
Go through your agenda, the photos on your phone, your Instagram stories, glance through your Facebook posts - all of this can help you remember the moments and milestones of this year.
Pick out the key moments:
Things that you learned
Projects that you realized
Insights that you had
Lessons that you learned
What are your top 3?
Also notice the things that did not happen.
Maybe you had a project idea at the beginning of the year, or a wish to change or improve something in your craft, artistry, or creativity, in your mindset, the way you do creative work, in the way you share it, or in the way your artist life & business is unfolding.
Perhaps you even started taking action towards it, but then the whole thing somehow ended up not getting done...and the dream still remains a dream.
Noticing the things that did not happen is not to cast self-judgement or self-blame, but to really become aware of your values, habits, inner and outer circumstances. It's about finding out if this specific goal is still relevant to you - and if it is - how you can approach it differently so that you actually get it done, rather than leaving it in the "album of creative ideas and goals that I once had but never happened".
That album tends to become a nagging voice inside of you, reminding you of all the things that you started but didn't finish, of all the things you said you'd do but didn't do, the things you said you wanted to change but didn't change. And that nagging inner voice tends to lead to all kinds of things ranging from creative blocks, lack of self esteem and loss of belief in yourself, to feeling "out of tune" with your life and lacking purpose and direction.
My job as a coach is to help you become aware of the inner and outer circumstances that contributed to your creative goal(s)not getting done, and to help you create a new strategy, get support, coaching and accountability so that youdo get it done. 😊
So if you notice you could use some help with your refining your creative project planning for 2025, with coaching to help you do something about those obstacles that keep sabotaging your intentions, I hope you join the Creative Compass workshop on January 5!
